Because this alloy is a variant of Ti-6Al-4V ELI, it offers many of the same benefits, including strength and light weight. It is created by alloying titanium with aluminum and vanadium. Unlike other forms of Ti-6Al-4V, however, it contains far smaller proportions of interstitial elements such as oxygen, iron, and carbon. This means it has higher ductility and fracture toughness than those other metals.
Like its counterparts in the same category, ASTM F136 titanium can be heat treated for greater strength. Some of the most common processes employed include mill annealing, beta annealing, and recrystallization annealing. These processes typically are performed in a vacuum or in an atmosphere of inert gases to prevent the formation of an extremely hard and brittle alpha phase layer.
Like many other forms of Ti-6Al-4V ELI, ASTM F136 offers exceptional biocompatibility. This means it resists corrosion and meshes well with bone, making it a good choice for medical applications. Among the many uses for this alloy include dental implants, surgical staples, and orthopedic pins that have to remain in the body for extended periods of time.
