Industrial Titanium

The Need for Industrial Titanium

Industrial titanium is a strong, lightweight, silver-gray metal used in manufacturing and industry. It has the highest strength-to-weight ratio of any metal on earth and resists rust, salt water, and harsh chemicals.

Titanium is roughly 45% lighter than steel while providing comparable strength in many applications. These characteristics make industrial titanium valuable for industrial components, chemical processing equipment, marine systems, structural parts, fasteners, and other applications where material performance is critical.

For companies sourcing titanium, Titanium Processing Center (TPC) provides a broad inventory of titanium products in numerous grades, sizes, specifications, and material forms. TPC is a complete stocking distributor and service center and supports customers with value-added processing designed to deliver material at or near the size and shape needed for subsequent manufacturing operations. Types of Industrial Titanium

Industrial titanium is available in numerous forms so buyers can select stock that aligns with their manufacturing requirements.

Billets & Forging Stock

Titanium billets provide substantial starting stock for applications requiring further forging or machining. Billets are particularly important in aerospace and other industries where manufacturers need larger sections of material for structural or high-strength components. TPC maintains titanium billet in a range of grades and specifications.

Available alloy options include Ti-6Al-4V Grade 5 and Ti-6Al-4V ELI Grade 23, along with commercially pure Grades 1 through 4. Ti-6Al-4V ELI is especially useful where enhanced material requirements apply, while commercially pure titanium can be appropriate when corrosion resistance and formability are higher priorities than maximum strength.

Bar & Rod

Titanium bar and rod are versatile material forms for industrial manufacturing. Round bar can serve as starting stock for shafts, studs, fasteners, fittings, and machined structural components. Rectangular bar provides another option when the geometry of the finished component makes flat-sided stock more practical.

TPC stocks titanium round bar in Ti-6Al-4V Grade 5, Ti-6Al-4V ELI Grade 23, Ti-6Al-4V STA, and commercially pure titanium grades. Ti-6Al-4V is particularly common in industrial bar and rod applications as its combination of strength, relatively low weight, durability, and corrosion resistance makes it useful across multiple demanding sectors.

Plate & Sheet

Titanium plate and sheet offer flat stock for structural components, machined parts, enclosures, equipment, and numerous other applications. TPC stocks titanium sheet from 0.016 to 0.187 inch thick and titanium plate from 0.1875 to 4 inches thick. Available materials include Ti-6Al-4V Grade 5, Ti-6Al-4V ELI Grade 23, and commercially pure titanium grades.

Sheet is well suited to applications requiring thinner material, while plate provides heavier starting stock for structural and machined components. The appropriate thickness, alloy, and specification should always be matched to the final application’s engineering requirements.

Tube, Pipe & Threaded Fittings

Titanium tube, pipe, and fittings are important in industrial fluid-handling systems as titanium combines low weight with excellent resistance to corrosion. These characteristics make titanium especially useful in marine, chemical processing, oil and gas, power generation, and other aggressive environments.

Depending on application and specification requirements, buyers may need seamless or welded titanium tubing. TPC’s product range includes titanium tube, pipe, and fittings, providing a single source for multiple components within an industrial system.

Threaded components may include internally threaded fittings as well as threaded elbows and flanges. When ordering these products, buyers should provide the applicable material specification and dimensional and thread requirements rather than assuming that components are interchangeable.

Wire, Threaded Rod, & Specialty Profiles

Titanium wire and threaded rod provide additional options for industrial manufacturing and assembly applications. Wire can support uses ranging from specialized industrial components to medical applications, while threaded rod may be selected where titanium fastener characteristics, corrosion resistance, or low weight are beneficial.

TPC supplies titanium rod and wire and can support customers with processing services when stock material needs to be reduced closer to the required dimensions. For specialty shapes, services such as sawing and waterjet cutting can help bring stock closer to a customer’s desired geometry.

What to Look For in Industrial Titanium

Selecting industrial titanium involves more than choosing a convenient stock size. Alloy grade, mechanical requirements, certification, surface condition, processing requirements, and dimensional specifications can all affect suitability.

Alloy Grade and Mechanical Properties

The first major consideration is the titanium grade. Ti-6Al-4V, commonly known as Grade 5, contains aluminum and vanadium and is valued for high strength, relatively low weight, durability, and corrosion resistance. TPC supplies Ti-6Al-4V in forms including billet, round bar, plate, and sheet.

Commercially pure titanium grades offer a different balance of properties. Grade 2, for example, is commercially pure titanium and is frequently selected when corrosion resistance and formability are central requirements.

The best choice depends on the application. Manufacturers requiring higher mechanical strength may prefer Ti-6Al-4V, while commercially pure titanium may be more suitable when exceptional corrosion performance is the primary concern.

Certification and Mill Traceability

Certification and traceability are especially important when purchasing industrial titanium for tightly controlled applications. Buyers should request the appropriate mill test reports or certificates and confirm that the supplied material meets the specification listed on the purchase order. TPC supplies domestic and DFAR-compliant materials with original mill test certificates for complete traceability. We are AS9100 and ISO 9001 certified.

Surface Condition and Finish

Surface condition should also be defined during material selection. Buyers should identify the required mill surface condition and any applicable finish requirements before placing an order, particularly when the titanium will remain visible or undergo additional surface processing.

Titanium can also receive decorative surface treatments, including anodized colors. Depending on subsequent finishing processes, titanium parts may be given colors or cosmetic appearances such as a rose gold appearance. These should be treated as downstream finishing requirements rather than inherent characteristics of the base titanium stock.

Near Net-Shape Processing and Services

Ordering material closer to the dimensions required for manufacturing can reduce downstream handling and material removal. TPC provides value-added processing capabilities including band sawing, plate sawing, waterjet cutting, and shearing. Additional processing capabilities may be available based on the material and order requirements. The distinction between processing and fabrication is important.

TPC is a stocking distributor and processing center. Our cutting services should be viewed as producing near net-shape or near net-size material, giving customers appropriately processed stock for their own final machining, forming, fabrication, or manufacturing operations.

Thread Compatibility and Internally Threaded Parts

Thread specifications should never be overlooked when ordering threaded titanium components. A fitting made from the correct titanium grade is not useful if its thread form, pitch, size, or engagement requirements are incompatible with the mating component.

When ordering internally threaded fittings, threaded elbows, flanges, pipe components, or threaded rod, specify the applicable thread standard and dimensions. Engagement length and other assembly requirements should also be confirmed. Providing these details during the quoting process helps ensure the supplied material is appropriate for the customer’s downstream application.
