For decades, MIL-T-9046 was one of the most common specifications for titanium alloys used in military applications. However, during the 1990s there was a concerted effort within the U.S. Department of Defense to move away from military specifications and use non-government standards as a way to streamline processes and reduce costs. This meant that MIL-T-9046 would be retired as of September 1999, to be replaced by AMS-T-9046.
In many ways, AMS-T-9046 was practically the same classification as MIL-T-9046, with only a few minor changes to the language separating the new non-government standard from the original military grade established in 1955. By May 2006, AMS-T-9046 was also cancelled, with a wide range of new specifications taking the place of all specifications falling under that outdated spec.
