Chemical Composition and Mechanical Properties

Like Ti-6Al-4V, Ti-6Al-4V ELI is a strong alloy consisting of titanium as well as aluminum and vanadium. However, it contains far fewer interstitial elements like iron, carbon and oxygen. This extra-low interstitial status is what gives the alloy its “ELI” designation. The interstitial elements are much more controlled during the melt process in its production.

Compared to standard Ti-6Al-4V, this alloy boasts much better ductility and fracture toughness, thanks to the reduced presence of iron, carbon and oxygen. Among the many Ti-6Al-4V ELI properties are exceptional biocompatibility, as well.

Heat Treatment of Ti-6Al-4V ELI

Depending on the application, Ti-6Al-4V ELI or ATSM F136 may need to be subjected to heat treatment. Among the most common of these processes are mill annealing, beta annealing or recrystallization annealing. These processes typically are performed in a vacuum or in an atmosphere of inert gases. This is to prevent the formation of an alpha phase layer called alpha case that is extremely hard and brittle.

Because of its light weight and high-strength properties, it’s no surprise that Ti-6Al-4V ELI is commonly used in the aerospace industry. In particular, the alloy’s higher ductility and resistance to fracturing make it a good fit for components that are exposed to extreme stresses.
