Use Cases for Ti-6Al-4V
As the most widely used titanium alloy, Ti-6Al-4V can be found in numerous industries. Perhaps most prominent of these is in the aerospace sector, where it has served an important role in reducing the weight of aircraft while also improving its performance. Some examples of aircraft components made with Ti-6Al-4V include engine parts, airframes, and landing gear. Even after decades of use, aerospace engineers continue to rely on titanium 6Al-4V as a crucial material when developing new technologies and designs, underscoring its utility.
Beyond the aerospace market, Ti-6Al-4V also sees widespread use in demanding sectors such as the oil and gas, power generation and defense industries. It’s used frequently for manufacturing vessels, hubs, blades and other elements that need to endure high levels of stress and extreme temperatures.
In the medical sector, Ti-6Al-4V’s high degree of biocompatibility has made it an important material for surgical implants. However, the alloy’s relatively weak shear strength and surface wear properties has limited its applications in this regard. Many manufacturers choose to apply surface treatments to improve Ti-6Al-4V’s surface wear capabilities.
